boats sailed on Saturday, April 27, for Sailfest 2002. The boats where
divided into three fleets, the SJ21 fleet, and two Portsmouth Fleets.
Fleet 1 was won by Hootie Bushart in a J24, followed by Bud Sweet and Jean Rawl in a Thistle. Allan and Janie Gowans came in third, with Joe Waters in his Melges 24 finishing fourth. The racing was close and in race 2, places 2 thru 6 were decided by less than a minute on corrected time. Sunday brought winds of 14-18 mph much of the fleet decided to stay onshore, Bushart however sailed a great race and won the race as well as the regatta, Bud Sweet survived and finished second, followed by Pierce in his S27.9. Fleet 2 consisted of six SJ21, the racing was tight but the fleet proved consistent as Joe Martin won all three races, Jill Avery finished second three times, Curtis and Suzanne Rhodes third three times, and Wally Stewart and Marti McKinnon fourth three time. Sonny Gresham and Jack Self also raced against and with one another and rounded out the fleet. Fleet 3 was a mixed bunch that was won by Ken Juergens in his PY23, Mike Tablas on his Hobie 16 finished second, and Tommy Weaver sailing his new Hunter 17 finished third. Fourth place was won by Frank McKinnon on a Laser, fifth was regatta chair David Mosley. Chuck Mingis sailing his first ever regatta in 47 years finished sixth and Dan Robinson in a MacGregor 25 came in seventh. For pictures of the regatta, look below. Other highlights of the weekend a very low registration fee that included two dinners. And David Mosely made beautiful trophies of embroidered LMSC burgees hanging in handmade frames. Participants received digital photographs of their boats while racing. All in all it was a very successful event and David Mosley deserves a round of applause for pulling it all together. Also thanks to Nancy Whiteside, Lyn Tablas, George Ashbridge SR and JR, and Patty Lawrence for helping out on race committee. |
