answers many questions that are not addressed in other cruising
books. The topics aren't just for women either. She discusses
every day events that are encountered in the cruising lifestyle
such as: how to dispose of trash, how you interact daily with
your crew and with other boats, how to make the adjustment, and
much more. She utilized the experiences of 21 participants,
experienced women cruisers/sailors, for the research and background
of the book. |

Under my Bed

This is not a how-to book. It’s a what-it’s-like book,
by someone who was initially a very reluctant sailing wife but ended
up spending six years aboard and cruising 28 countries. It is also
by someone who met a lot of sailors who dearly wanted their wives
to sail with them and it’s a book that both men and women are
enjoying. To view excerpts, you can click on the author's website;

Webmaster's note: The book is
available for purchase from the author's website. As of this posting,
the Amazon price (links provided) is somewhat lower.

This is the kind of book librarians should know about, even
if they do not purchase it for their libraries. Aimed primarily
at the yachting and cruising community, it gives precise information
on ports of entry, regulations, fees, visa or passport requirements,
docking and repair facilities, and other items of interest to
sailors. The coverage is the entire world, including the U.S.
Preliminary pages cover three topics: formalities, health precautions,
and communications, this last dealing with ship-to-shore radio,
the use of satellites for long-distance communication, and search-and-rescue
operations. The remainder of the book is divided into 12 chapters,
parceling out the world in maritime rather than political divisions,
such as the North Pacific Islands, or the North Indian Ocean and
Red Sea. |
Cruising
101: Avoiding the Pitfalls of Paradise
Amy L. Sullivan, Kevin J. Donnelly / Paperback
/ Published 1997
 |
Cruising 101 serves as both a reality check and a teaser for
those who have ever dreamed of charting their own course, pulling
up anchor, and setting sail into the sunset. The authors take
us through their experiences of preparing their 30-foot sloop,
Free Fall, for a 16-month cruise along
the west coast of Mexico. "Of the dozens of books we have
read, only a few touch on what we now consider the most important
piece of equipment a dreamer-turned-doer can take aboard, a positive
and flexible attitude." The authors provide insights like
this as they explore important
considerations such as on-board relationships, options for budget
cruisers, getting the vessel ready for departure, equipping the
vessel, food provisioning, and cruising etiquette. |
