Flying Scots

The Flying Scots ® are Fast, Stable and Safe

The Flying Scots ® are a very stable, simple to rig, 19′ open cockpit daysailer, and has an active fleet at LMSC with a current total of 12 boats on the club premises.

Fifty years of sailing and marine construction experience produced the Flying Scot®, a Sailing Hall of Fame design. It’s perfect for family trips, single-handed fun, and an excellent racer crewed by only two. It is also a good investment. Each Flying Scot® is hand-crafted with the highest quality materials and methods.

A one-design (original Scots can be as fast as new Scots), the first Scot ever built still wins races! Tommy Weaver, from our own Fleet 158, proudly sails hull number 2 and is definitely a competitive threat every time he launches for a race.  The late Gordon Douglass was an internationally known racing champion, so he designed the Scot for speed.

The Scot is a light-displacement, shallow draft design (she launches in 12 inches of water), great for “gunkholing” in shallow rivers and lakes. She has a flat, tapered shape in the stern which allows her to plane. This means she will come out of the water and is not limited to her waterline hull-speed. With over 200 square feet of sail area, she has the “engine” to move well in any wind speed. Get her on a beam-reach with 15 knots of wind, and experience the thrill of a planing hull! The Scot is not a “flopsy” acrobatic design. Her slightly tunneled hull design, hard bilges and weighted centerboard provide a strong righting moment. The wide side deck and seat allow the Scot to take a knock- down with little or no water in the boat, and one person can easily right her in the water.

Call 803-735-0011 or email Fleet Captain Tommy Weaver for more information on the Flying Scot® or Flying Scot® fleet 158 at LMSC. If you are interested, Tommy will be happy to arrange a demo sail with a local skipper. Between racing, day cruising, and social gatherings, we, in Fleet 158, manage to have more than our share of fun and enjoyment.
