2017 Flying Scot Fleet 158 Championship (Results)
Fleet 158 held its championship regatta Saturday October 21st, 2017, under bright sunny skies with pleasant temperatures in the high 70’s to low 80’s. Winds were another prospect entirely! We were very lucky, given the dismal forecast, to see a southwesterly breeze fill in at about 4-5 knots about 30 minutes after our planned 1300 postpone signal. Six boats came to the line and managed to get in 3 light air races before the pressure dropped. Amazingly enough the breeze was fairly steady. Working the shifts was productive, but oscillations were small enough that boat speed was a dominant factor.
Ryan Gaskin and Crew Oleg Uvarov sailed Single Malt consistently, with good speed and perhaps a little pointing advantage in flat water to eke out a one point win over a very fast Lorelai skippered by Willie Liddicoat and excellent crew work by spouse and sailing partner, Tammy. Ben Conner, assisted by crew Tom Berens, won a tie breaker in Don’t Panic with Tommy and Debbie Weaver sailing Dream Weaver 2 to take 3rd. Allan Gowans and youth crew Veronica Vogt allowed Rocket Pig to find some holes on the right side of the course and a couple of light spots on the downwind legs that let the rest of the fleet slip away.
We were pleased to have Youth skipper David Ziehl with crew Zachary Ziehl and Keishon Burkhalter entering their first Fleet Fleet championship series
After the racing, everyone retired to the patio to enjoy good conversation, snacks, and anticipate the club hosted Annual Business Meeting dinner. Fun on the water, fun shore side. That’s why we sail.
