2016 Flying Scot Fleet 158 Championship (Results)

Fleet 158 held its championship regatta Saturday October 1st, 2016, under bright sunny skies with pleasant temperatures in the high 70’s to low 80’s.  Winds were another prospect entirely!  In a running battle between westerly and northerly systems with 90 degree shifts and about four gusts to 7 knots adding to the “excitement” of 3 and 4 knot breezes.  Seven boats came to the line for these very challenging conditions.   Wind progressed down the course in sharply defined pressure bands that placed a premium on finding the new wind and staying there as long as possible.  The big shifts always seemed to hit the weather mark, the start line, or the finish line just as the first boats attempted to round or cross.  Fortunately, there were no youngsters on the course to pick up on some of the saltier invocations to the wind gods at these critical junctures.

Tommy and Debbie Weaver sailed consistently, except for race 2, in the top two positions and were rewarded with line honors for the five race series.  Allan and Janie Gowans tied with Ryan Gaskin and Clark Frady on points , but took 2nd place for the series with higher overall finishes in races 2 and 3, leaving Ryan and Clark to contemplate what might have been.

We were pleased to have two boats participating in their first Fleet 158 Championship series.  They were Bob and Joyce Anderson, who came out to play even though they don’t yet have a spinnaker, and Michael and Becki Charmichael who joined the fleet just this year.

Just to make things fair for the rest of us, The Liddicoats and the Carmichaels both returned from extended international trips with massive jet lag, so they both earned “Soldier On” recognition for the event.  Thanks to Chris Mielke, Ivan Lopatin, Bill Walter, and Bud Buckwell for managing the racing and resetting the marks multiple times.  Awesome job under trying circumstances.

After the racing, everyone retired the patio to enjoy Burgers, Brats, and Beer, not necessarily in that order.  Fun on the water, fun shore side.  That’s why we sail.
